Bio
Sydney based photographer Nic Bezzina was born in the rural mining town of Broken Hill. He studied special make-up effects in Sydney before relocating to New York for a 9-month internship making stop-motion puppets for MTV and Carl Paolino Studios. Returning to Sydney in 2004 he purchased his first SLR, a Nikon FE2 and a manual 85mm lens and began shooting local gigs. Soon after, he took up a residency at the Annandale Hotel, well known in Sydney for its live music.
Bezzina has shot over a hundred performances by artists including Nick Cave, Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails, Slayer and AFI. Shooting live music has its own set of challenges; time limits, moving targets and unpredictable or dim lighting. Working and learning amidst this atmosphere has made Bezzina a quick thinking and highly adaptable photographer.
In 2008 Bezzina won a national competition to shoot for Rolling Stone magazine. From here he assisted some of Sydney’s leading portrait, advertising and fashion photographers and began to shift his focus from live music to portraiture.
In 2010 he was nominated for Capture magazine’s ‘Emerging Photographer of the Year’ in portrait, editorial and documentary categories and was a top 10 finalist in the Qantus Spirit of Youth awards.
Bezzina’s speciality is music and portraiture and he admits a passion for capturing people in their own environments. “I love the day to day challenges faced with being a photographer,” he says, “being creative, running my own business and just being an observer. Photography pushes me to really look at and study the world we live in.”
